In order to celebrate my digital mastery of planning tools (i.e. we didn’t make it to our Marocan cuisine’s class because I had wrongly entered it in my agenda) we decided to take advantage of my father-in-law’s offer to baby-sit Jeremie and went to the theater. Because Halloween is next week, we picked ‘Elisabeth, The Golden Age.’ What? It’s not an horror movie? You’re right… But Nathalie and I are not big fans of horror movies.
So how was the movie? Pretty good. I don’t know how accurate it is - I’m not an expert in English history - but the story is compelling and captivated me. Romance and tension is built up nicely. Some scenes’ symbolism are over-done (I’ thinking about that scene where the king of Spain prays by a candle while his Armada fights against the Englishs ships) but over-all it’s fell done. There are a few bloody scenes, so be prepared to close your eyes if you have a sensible heart. The costumes are beautiful and the actors are doing a good job.
The final naval scene looks over-simplified considering the length of the movie and the historical importance of that battle. We could have got an extra 10 minutes without affecting too much the flow of the story.
Looking at what else is being shown on the big screen these days, ‘Elisabeth, The Golden Age’ is probably your best bet for a movie night. But don’t expect a block buster.

RSS Readers for Windows Mobile

So I’m looking for a good RSS reader for Windows Mobile. So far I tried pRSSReader and it crashed many times on me so, although the GUI looks good, I won’t select that one.

I’m now trying PocketRSS. I don’t like the GUI, but it hasn’t crashed so far. I have another one to try after that: moRSS.

Cory Doctorow got it all wrong when he is saying copying data from one computer to another is going to be easier and faster as machines and networks get better. Nathalie copied the pictures from our digital camera to her Windows Vista PC. Now, I want to copy them, through out 100 Mbits network, to my Mac. Windows Vista estimates it will take 3 days to copy a little bit more than 1 Gb of data. How can that possibly be? Anyway. I cancel the operation and put a blank DVD-R in the drive and set to copy the data to the disk. Windows Vista now estimates copying those photos to the DVD-R will take 7 days. WTF?!? Does somebody know what’s up with Windows Vista file copying subroutines that is so badly broken? It’s so frustrating.

This is a good historical review of how manga and anime find their way out of Japan, into North America. Nicely done. I have my own take as to why I feel like manga and anime were adopted more early in Québec, but I’ll keep that for a separate post.

Vince nous avait offert cette bouteille plus tôt cette année et nous rendait visite ce soir. Mes parents étaient eux-aussi présents. Au menu, nous avions préparé une râclette. J’ai pris peu de notes, mais voici tout de même mes impressions.

Le Château Gaillard avait un nez légèrement fermé, peut-étre parce que nous l’avons servi trop froid. On décelait tout de même des arômes fruitées et légèrement épicées.

Ce Saint-Émilion est d’une belle couleur grenat. En bouche, il est boisé et velouté (comme dit l’étiquette.) Il est bien balancé.

Un bon 4/5 sur mon échelle personnelle.

Updates on home improvements

The day started on a bad note when I realized that the molding we added to the kitchen cabinets’ doors was preventing the doors from opening properly. A few trip to Rona & Home Depot later, I came to the conclusion that I would have to undo a good portion of the work we had done the day before. Indeed, we unglued all the moldings, cut them again, and glued them back in a slightly different pattern so that the doors would open properly. This wasted half a day worth of work. Nonetheless, we’re still on tracks, but we can’t take it easy. (I know, it sounds like the host on a TLC show.)

So tomorrow we’re painting the doors We should be done by the end of the day. I also plan on finishing the framing (to extend the cabinets up to the ceiling) and working on three drawers for one of the units. Two days left to complete things… Can we do it? I think we’ll be ok.
